It’s a common misconception that self care is selfish, in fact it’s the one thing self care is not. We are emotional beings and require different things to maintain our sanity. Unfortunately in present day society there’s lots of stigma around mental health, nobody should be made to feel ashamed of taking care of themselves for any reason. Self care doesn’t have to be a spa day with essential oils or aromatherapy either It can just be things that make you feel good. Most of my self care activities either include fitness or creativity because those are two major aspects of my life. Below are a list of things I do to maintain my happy:
Honestly I may enjoy exercise a little too much, But it’s one of those things that takes me to my happy place. The only reason I run and jog is because of the almost meditative state I go into. I definitely don’t run for the feeling of everything jiggling as I run down a trail that’s for sure. My style of dance certainly fits into the style of “stripper”, but that is because I truly always dance like nobody is watching. Or maybe I dance Like I wish there was someone watching?
Keeping up with my creative side is a less vigorous way to maintain my self care and sometimes that’s what a person needs. I love meditative coloring specifically because It’s a great way to spend a day relaxing while still doing something. This year I want to get back into sewing my own clothes as I haven’t done much of that in the last few years. Nothing feels better than having clothes that fit just the way you like. Thankfully all of these things have also proven to be extremely therapeutic in my paralysis recovery.
